Compare And Contrast High School Versus College

All throughout high school I’ve sat and listened to a countless number of teachers throw information in my face. Whether it be a new concept in math or a description of how to properly play kickball in gym. With all the years of hearing lecture after lecture, I cannot believe why I decided to come to college. I have signed and paid to have trained professionals throw more material in my face. One of the biggest difference between high school and college lectures is that I am no longer forced to listen. I pay the money, I make the decisions. In addition to the lectures, sports and a student’s social life are also different in college. Sports are either taken more serious or they are not. Even the social life of a student is subject to change. They could have been the most popular kid in high school and then come to college and have no one know them.
“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who'll decide where to go..”
Dr. Seuss: Oh, the Places You'll Go!

High schools according to Mark Edmundson, author of Why Teach, are “credential factories in overdrive” (Edmundson 104). Students will spend their high school careers working to get accepted into the top schools of their choice. Building up their transcripts and getting the best letters of recommendation. High school is a steppingstone to college. It is a glimpse of the college experience. College classes are a big part of the college experience. Classes in high school usually range from 25-30 students. Depending on the college, that number can quickly turn into 100-200 students. High school classes offer more one on one learning with the teacher and have greater chances for students to fully understand the material being taught. Students are able to interact with each other and formulate more personal relationships that can make learning easier.
Another difference between high school and college are sports. According to Edmundson sports help build character. They help students discover another part of themselves. They are able to push themselves and if they have enough dedication in themselves, they can be great. In high school we decide to join sports teams, we decide how hard we want to work and how far we are willing to go. Edmundson himself did sports in high school and knew that what he “had was a will that was anything but weak” (Edmundson 69). The way one performed in sports or academics also shaped the way their social life appears in high school.

High School versus College

High school and college are very dissimilar. There are the main differences and then there are differences that aren't very distinct. These differences include homework, teacher-student relationships, and attendance policies. In this paper I will discuss the major and minor differences between high school and college. I will also explain why responsibility is a very important factor in high school and college.
In high school most teachers will let you turn in your homework late if you give them an excuse such as, "I forgot it at home" or "It's in my locker." In college if you give your professor one of these excuses they will say, "Too bad." There are also a lot more tests in high school. Usually, there is a test every week or two. Although there are more tests, the work is not as hard. Most of the time you will read aloud in class or go over every point of the homework so that there is no question of what you have to do.
Teachers in college for the most part don't really care whether or not you are in class. All it means is that if you are not there, you are going to get a failing grade if it happens too often. Missing too many classes will cause the teacher to withdraw you from the class, resulting in a failing grade. If you do it the smart way you would withdraw from the class yourself because then it would have no negative effect on your overall G.P.A. In high school the teachers are always on you about attendance. If you miss too many days you can fail. If you are not in class they want to know why. They also want a note from your parents excusing you from class. Some schools even want your parents to call you in sick if you are not going to be there. If you do not have a note they can write you up for an unauthorized absence and, give you a detention.
In college you have greater responsibility. You are an adult, and they expect you to act like one. The teachers expect you to except the consequences if you do not do the required work. In high school the teacher would probably call your parents, and let them know that you aren't doing what you are supposed to do.

The main difference between high school and college is the responsibility factor. The differences all point out one thing. Students are expected to mature over four years. They want the students by the time they reach college to know what they have to do to make it. The high school teachers teach them responsibility by making them do their homework and monitoring their attendance.
